• FDG-PET/CT seems to be a promising tool in imaging various infective and inflammatory processes in the musculoskeletal system.
• The procedure is simple, less time consuming, non-invasive and is well tolerated by the patient.
• Apart from FDG, 18F-NaF, FDG-labelled leukocytes, and Ga-68 citrate may be used for infection/inflammation imaging. Newer tracers, such as I-124-fialuridine, are being explored for the same.
• FDG-PET/CT seems to be useful not only in imaging of various skeletal and joint infections, but also for various inflammatory diseases affecting muscles and nerves.
• PET/MR imaging fusion has added strength of metabolic imaging to MR imaging, which is already an established modality for imaging finer details of cartilage, muscles, and nerves. As more data become available, PET/MR seems to be the front runner in imaging of musculoskeletal infection and inflammation.
