ABSTRACT
Dynamics in alkanethiol-protected silver based nano-metal clusters and layered thiolates are studied by
quasielastic neutron scattering studies particularly to investigate the melting charactersitics. The dynamics of the chains
in the melt state has been modeled in which each hydrogen atom in the chain undergoes localized translational diffusion
around the carbon atom generating a sphere of increasing diameter along the chain with minimum at the end where it is
connected to the metal surface and increases linearly to a maximum at the other end. The diameters are
estimated from the extracted elastic incoherent structure factor. Associated
diffusion constants within these spheres are estimated from the width of the
quasielastic components.
