The
outer shell of radioactive material shipping casks is fabricated using
SA 516 Gr.70 steel plates. The cask design has to meet the stringent
qualification requirements such as hypothetical accident condition of 9m
free drop on rigid target. The computer simulation of such tests
requires material data under dynamic loading. Considering this, a
special test facility called SHB test setup was developed and high
strain-rate tests were carried out in tensile and compression mode.
Comparison of the test results under the two reverse modes of loading
was made to show the effect of loading rate and test configuration on
the material property.
